Artists in Residence
Set within a conservation area this new-build house and studio for two artists fronts two roads of pronounced differing character. The house responds to the language of the conservation area, employing details and materials found within the surroundings. We produced a design that mediates between our rather ordinary 1980s neighbour to one side and a much grander Victorian dwelling to the other. The components are familiar but their scale and assembly creates an individual language – we hope that it provokes a more focussed gaze from passing neighbours on the rich details of the historic street setting.
The studio facing the rear street is formed of a double-butterfly roof – borrowed from the adjacent Georgian cottages, but glazed to allow north light. The resultant form sits comfortably within this eclectic street of workshops, fences and smart Georgian terraced houses.
