Redchurch Townhouse
Following completion of Redchurch Corner, 31/44 were commissioned to undertake a significant extension to their hotel on the adjacent site. We added a slim building running through the block from Redchurch Street to a quieter industrial mews behind, which carefully stitches phase one to the adjacent Georgian terrace. The language of the new facade matches that of Redchurch Corner, without directly replicating it: a sparse brick facade articulated by detail, texture and quality revealed only around windows and doors. The two phases act as one building, while respecting the established urban pattern and piecemeal character of the local streets. To the rear on the more industrial Whitby Street, now the entrance to the hotel, we developed an architectural language which retained the industrial quality of the road whilst creating a visually prominent new ‘front door’. Always viewed obliquely the cluster of columns evokes the image of a neoclassical civic building – this almost sub-conscious association draws people to the entrance despite the back-street quality of the mews.
